Tech News:Google co-founder Larry Page under fire by departed exec

A former Google executive went public on Tuesday with a lament that the Internet star has become obsessed with advertising and seizing the online social networking crown from Facebook.

James Whittaker left Microsoft in 2009 for a high-level software engineering job at Google only to recently jump back to the California-based firm's rival.

In a personal blog post he explained why he left what is considered one of the world's most desirable workplaces.

"The Google I was passionate about was a technology company that empowered its employees to innovate," Whittaker said.

"The Google I left was an advertising company with a single corporate-mandated focus."

That focus was to conquer the online social networking realm where Facebook rules and Google stumbled with offerings such as Buzz and Wave, according to Whittaker.

"Larry Page himself assumed command to right this wrong," he said, referring to the Google co-founder who took over as chief executive last year.

"Social became state-owned, a corporate mandate called Google+," he continued.

Emphasis was put on synching Google+ social network with the company's popular services such as search and online video venue YouTube.

Budget News: Railway Budget 2012: Passenger fares hiked for first time in 9 years

For nine years, successive governments have avoided raising fares for train passengers across the country's rail network.

Railway minister Dinesh Trivedi announced increases in passenger fares on Wednesday. It ranges from 2 paise per km to 30 paise per km. While hikes in passenger fares for second class tickets and shorter distances is marginal, fares on first class tickets for long distance journeys go up by as high as 10 per cent.

He also announced on Wednesday introduction of a fuel adjustment component in ticket pricing in the future. Simply put, this means ticket prices will rise or fall in tandem with changes in fuel prices.

While this will not be implemented now, the minister has clarified that passenger fares cannot be insulated going forward from rising costs. He said that the government is looking to set up a tariff regulatory authority for passenger fares and freight rates.

He said that passenger fares cannot be insulated from rising costs of operation for ever. The ministry is setting up a panel to advise on the need of such a body. A decision would be taken after this panel submits a report.

For better management at ticket windows, passenger fares to be rounded off.

"The proposal to rationalize the fares will cause minimum impact on the common man," the minister said. He said that the Railways is likely to earn Rs. 89,339 crore from freight fares in 2012-13 while passenger fares are likely to add Rs. 36,073 crore to the revenue.

* For suburban trains, the proposal is to hike fares by 2 paise per km.

* For second class passengers in mail and express trains, the fares are proposed to go up by 3 paisa per km.

* Sleeper fares are proposed to be hiked by 5 paise per km.

* AC Chair Car fares are proposed to go up by 10 paise per km

* AC second class fares by 15 paise per km

* AC first class fares are proposed to go up by 30 paise per km. This is a significant hike. A Mumbai-Howrah ticket would now cost 30 per cent more than before.

* A platform ticket will cost Rs. 5.

Rakhi had some words of appreciation for the Finance Minister. "I have full confidence that Pranab Mukherjee would make a good Budget," she said.

Last year, Rakhi created a stir when she expressed her desire to marry Baba Ramdev. She also spoke about how she admired Rahul Gandhi.

Japan ministers were warned of Fukushima meltdown: Report

Japan was on Saturday preparing to mark the first anniversary of its tsunami, as government papers revealed ministers were warned of the possibility of meltdowns at Fukushima just after the waves struck.

A summary of a government meeting held about four hours after a giant earthquake sent a wall of water crashing into the atomic power station showed that one unidentified participant had cautioned of the risk of a meltdown.

"If the temperature of the reactor cores rises after eight hours, there is a possibility that a meltdown will occur," the person said, according to the summary released on Friday.

Fukushima Daiichi, 220 kilometres (140 miles) northeast of Tokyo, spewed radiation after its cooling systems were knocked out by the tsunami when it crushed coastal communities and left more than 19,000 people dead or missing.

The government and plant operator Tokyo Electric Power (TEPCO) maintained for months there had been no meltdown at Fukushima, despite repeated warnings from independent experts.

They finally admitted in May that three of six reactors had suffered meltdowns.

Tens of thousands of people were made homeless by the nuclear crisis and some tracts of land inside a 20-kilometre exclusion zone are expected to be uninhabitable for decades because of radiation levels.

An Article on What Indian youngsters learnt from Rahul Dravid...!

During Rahul Dravid's retirement announcement, one of the main questions asked was about filling the void in India's middle order with a worthy replacement. Dravid, stopping short of identifying his successors, replied, "I think there is a huge group of players that can be better than Rahul Dravid." However, MS Dhoni cautioned that it would be unadvisable for them to strictly focus on emulating Dravid, as it could put them under tremendous pressure and hence impede their growth. ESPNcricinfo asked four young Indian batsmen, on the fringes, what they've learnt from Dravid

Cheteshwar Pujara

I was 20 or 21. He was playing for Karnataka against Saurashtra in Rajkot. He is one of my idols. I just wanted to ask him that if I wanted to play at the international level, what should I do and how can I improve myself.

He was very happy to talk to me. He was very friendly. He told me he had heard a lot about me scoring in domestic cricket and he was really impressed with that. When you hear from a big player, that he has heard a bit about you, it is very nice. After that, he gave me a few tips about succeeding at the top level.

If it is similar to your game, it is easier to communicate and even he can understand my mentality, what I am thinking and how I can improve. Because he has gone through this stage many years back, he can understand a youngster's psychology.
