moto_x_wood_back_floor.jpg

Motorola has officially announced a 64GB variant of its flagship smartphone, the Moto X, in the US. Carrying a price tag of $449 (Rs. 26,500 approximately), the phone costs $100 (Rs. 5,900) more than its 16GB counterpart.

Interestingly, the company has also launched a 'try then buy' program for the Moto X, which entitles customers to try the smartphone for two weeks before making a purchase, Android Central reports.

The Moto X (16GB) was launched in India at Rs. 23,999 in March. The Moto X launch came a few weeks after the successful launch of the budget smartphone Moto G  in the country, also via Flipkart.

Tech Buzz:An app for the Parents to decrease stress

If you are a parent and have to deal with kids who give you the jitters, this app is designed for you.

The app delivers research-based strategies to help decrease stress during emotionally charged interactions with their children.

The system, called ParentGuardian, detects stress and presents interventions in real-time.

Developed by computer scientists at Microsoft Research and University of California, San Diego, the system combines a mobile application and sensor to detect stress in parents.

"Instead of focusing on an individual in need we are looking at how to build and design technology for the family as a whole and what's beneficial for them," said Laura Pina, who presented her work at the 8th "International Conference on Pervasive Computing Technologies for Healthcare" held in Germany recently.

"We wanted to help parents to be the parents they want to be," added Pina, a PhD student in computer science at University of California, San Diego and former intern at Microsoft Research.

The system was initially tested on a small group of parents of children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD).

It combines a sensor worn on the wrist with a smart phone and tablet as well as a server that analyses the data from the sensor.

The interventions are based on "Parenting Behavioural Therapy" which has been shown to be effective in addressing the needs of children with ADHD and their parents.

The therapy teaches parents the skills they need to work on and has been shown to have long term effects for both parents and child.

It has been shown to improve self control and self awareness in children and reduce parental stress.

Parents said they found the heat-of-the-moment prompts particularly useful.

Tech Buzz:Flexible displays in 2014 – LG and Samsung

Flexible Displays Samsung LG Nokia

There is a good chance you did not hear about the SID 2014 conference that ended today in San Diego. The Society for Information Display (SID) academic conference ran all this past week with one focus, display technology. Now that it is over, if we had to choose a theme for the conference, it would have been 'flexible displays.'

The event handed out six awards, in three categories, with an overwhelming 5 of the 6 awards going to either curved devices or materials that support flexible displays. The big winners, as related directly to the smartphones we carry with us, started with Samsung taking a gold award for Display of the Year for their 5.68-inch FHD curved AMOLED display. The LG G Flex took gold in the Display Application of the Year category, rocking its 6-inch curved display.

LG G Flex vs Samsung Galaxy Round Quick Look Hands on AA (4 of 11)

Curved vs flexible displays

The above mentioned units offer a great curved experience, with some flexibility, but let us not confuse that with being bendable to any significant degree. Nokia may not have taken any awards at the SID conference, but they may just be the ones to watch for the future of flexible displays.

Nokia, along with Semiconductor Energy Laboratory (SEL) Co Ltd and Advanced Film Device (AFD) Inc announced a 5.9-inch OLED panel with the ability to fold to an amazing 2mm radius. Now, that's what I call a flexible display. In their application, the display was made to fold in half, like a book, and into a "three-fold" display, with two folds.

Nokia Display Book fold

The display provides a 720p resolution, or 249ppi, which may not be anyone's definition of a high-end display, but is some of the best resolution we've seen for a display with this level of flexibility. That 2mm radius means that the fold is not quite touching, and certainly cannot take a pressed down crease, but should last you more than 100,000 bends, says SEL.
Nokia Display Tri fold

Now for the geeky stuff, just skip this paragraph if you want. The display is made by forming a release layer, sealing layer and color filter layer on one piece of glass, then a release layer, sealing layer, TFT layer and an OLED layer on another piece of glass. Attach those two together, peel off the glass and replace with a sealing and flexible substrate. Nice and simple.

Tech Buzz:CIA Joins Facebook, Twitter

cia_twitter_account_screenshot.jpg

The secretive US spy agency joined the world of social media Friday, and quickly had the Twitterverse talking.

"We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet," the Central Intelligence Agency quipped on its newly minted official Twitter page.

We can neither confirm nor deny that this is our first tweet.

-- CIA (@CIA) June 6, 2014

Within two hours of the post, it received around 90,000 retweets and the CIA counted 115,000 followers.

The Twitter Government and Politics team welcomed the posting with a #BestPractice hashtag for being "creative with your first tweet."

CIA director John Brennan said in a statement that the new Twitter and Facebook accounts aimed to help the agency "more directly engage with the public and provide information on CIA's mission, history and other developments."

"We have important insights to share," Brennan said.

The agency already had accounts with YouTube and Flickr.

There's little chance the agency will post spy secrets.

Instead, it plans to post its rare press releases, information about careers within the agency or about historic missions that have since been declassified.

Tech Buzz:Motorola Has Resolved Moto G's Unregistered IMEI Numbers Issue

It seems Motorola has finally resolved the Moto G unregistered IMEI number issue affecting some Moto G units, by registering all the IMEI numbers with all network operators in the country.

Motorola in a Facebook post confirmed that it had resolved the unregistered IMEI number issue and also appealed to impacted customers to activate their Moto G units.

MotoG update: We wanted to let you know that we now have #MotoG devices with IMEI nos starting with 3533 registered with ALL network operators. All impacted customers can now activate your phones immediately.

Once again apologies for the inconvenience and thank you for your patience and faith in Motorola!

The unregistered IMEI issue on some Moto G units came to light on Sunday when Motorola posted a status update on its Facebook page stating that it had discovered an activation problem with some Moto G devices sold in India, elaborating that these units featured IMEI numbers that had not yet been registered with carriers.

It's worth noting that not many handset makers have had as successful a return to the Indian smartphone market as Motorola. The company is immensely popular in India with its three currently available handsets in India - Moto E, Moto G and Moto X. Currently, the Moto E and Moto G are sold out at Flipkart.

Motorola on Tuesday announced the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update for its Moto E, Moto G and Moto X.

Tech Buzz:Motorola Moto E available on Flipkart at Rs. 6,999

The Moto E is once again available on Flipkart at Rs. 6,999, in limited quantities.

Notably, both the Black and White Moto E variants are currently available on the e-commerce website, as we write this post. There is no word how many units of the Moto E have been replenished currently by Flipkart.

The last time when Moto E came back in-stock was May 30; however, within minutes the smartphone went 'out of stock'.

Earlier in May, Flipkart had brought a limited stock of 20,000 Moto E units for consumers that was finished within hours of going on sale.

moto_e_black_white_combo_official.jpg

Ever since the Moto E debuted in India via Flipkart, there have been multiple instances that the handset has gone 'out of stock' and came back 'in-stock'.

The Moto E was launched in mid-May and has been creating a buzz in the Indian market with its impressive pricing. It runs the most recent Android 4.4 KitKat out-of-the-box.

Motorola rolled out the Android 4.4.3 KitKat update for the Moto E on Monday.

Flipkart also started selling the Moto E's colourful back covers at Rs. 899. The back covers for the Moto E have been available in nine colours - Chaulk, Cherry, Lemon Lime, Licorice, Raspberry, Royal Blue, Spearmint, Turquoise, and Violet.

For those unaware, Moto E comes in Black and White colour options, but the interchangeable back panels let you switch to other colours like Lemon and Turquoise.

The Motorola Moto E comes with a 4.3-inch display with a qHD (540x960 pixels) resolution, and 256ppi pixel density. Motorola is also touting the Corning Gorilla Glass 3 screen of the phone, along with its 'water-nano coating' which provides a measure of water resistance.

It is powered by a 1.2GHz dual-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 processor along with Adreno 302 GPU alongside 1GB of RAM. The Moto E is a dual-SIM phone that supports Micro-SIM cards and an 'intelligent calling feature.'

Tech Buzz: Xolo Q1010i review : The camera is the best feature

The new Xolo Q1010i, for instance, packs in features which till a few months back would have made a flagship phone proud. But how good is the phone? I take it for a spin:
The Xolo Q1010i is priced Rs 13,499

Tech Specs: 5-inch HD IPS OGS display | 1.3GHz quad-core Mediatek MT6582 processor | 1GB RAM | 8GB internal memory, microSD up to 32GB | 8 MP rear camera with Sony Exmor sensor, 2MP front camera | Dual-SIM (GSM + GSM) | 3G, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth | 2250mAH battery | Android 4.2 Jelly Bean upgradeable to KitKat

Price: Rs 13,499

Design: The Xolo Q1010i, as expected, looks just like its two-month old predecessor, the Xolo Q1010. The two phones are different, but not different enough for it to be visible in the design. The Q1010i has a premium look and feel, with the camera on the rear making its presence felt with a metallic frame. The phone too has a metallic frame, but it blends well with the rest of the body. The quality of the plastic used also sets it apart from most other phones in this price range. Plus, the three keys are not on the screen and below on the bezel, giving you more real estate on the phone. The Q1010i has Asahi Scratch Resistant Glass.

Q1010i 3-horz

Screen: The full HD screen ensures clear pictures. Good enough for you to enjoy movies on this 5-inch screen. However, it is not so great to look at in sunlight, even a full brightness. Also, I noticed a couple of spots on the screen when I had a white background, but that has to be a problem with the specific unit.

Performance: You get a good feeling when the first benchmark test you run on a smartphone marks it a top-end device, when you know you have only paid a fraction of what such a device will actually cost. The Q1010i is one such device. As I said, it has high-end specs so you won't have any trouble with day-to-day activities. Multi-tasking is smooth and there was no lag when I tried my hand at some games. The phone does heat up a bit at times. But overall, the experience is much better than what you would expect at this price point.

Memory: The Xolo Q1010i has more internal storage than its predecessor. So you will have around 6GB at your disposal out of the 8GB. This also means that you can put off buying an SD card for a few months.

Connectivity: Network reception and call quality was good.

Software: The phone runs the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean and

will be support Android Kitkat when the time comes. The phone supports on the go (OTG) and I would advise you to but one of the those new USB ports that you can plug into the micro-HDMI instead of an SD card. The phone hardly has any bloatware and that is a good thing.

Camera: The biggest upgrade in this phone has to be its 8MP camera with its Sony exmor sensor. Sony has been really working on the camera capabilities of its phones and that shows when you use the Q1010i. This camera is fast and responsive. You don't have to wait for it to click a picture. The results are really impressive when you are shooting outdoors. Indoors, there is a little lack of clarity, however it is still much better than the other phones in this range thanks to its   f/2.0 aperture. The camera app also give a lot of features which are not that common in other Android phones. You can really play around with the pictures styles as well as more detailed stuff like ISO and saturation. Yes, the camera is the best feature of this phone.

Outdoor photos

Battery: The battery life is good and can last a full day if you don't push the screen brightness to maximum.

Verdict: If you are looking for a good medium range Android, the Xolo Q1010i seems like a good option. Buy this if you like to play with the camera and flaunt a stylish looking device. Yes, there is competition from the Moto G at this price point, but the street price of the Xolo Q1010i might help you make a decision in its favour.
