Current Affairs: Colombipra's Paulina Vega wins Miss Universe title

Colombia's Paulina Vega was crowned Miss Universe on Monday, beating out contenders from the United States, Ukraine, Jamaica and The Netherlands at the world's top beauty pageant in Florida.

The 22-year-old model and business student triumphed over 87 other women from around the world, and is only the second beauty queen from Colombia to take home the prize. The last time Colombia won the crown was in 1956 when Luz Marina Zuluaga took home the title. Vega, wearing a long silver sequined gown, was beaming and tearful as she accepted her sash and crown from reigning Miss Universe, Venezuelan Gabriela Isler. She edged out first runner-up, Nia Sanchez from the United States, hugging her as her win was announced. Vega spoke proudly of her country, and said in the question round Colombia has been a role model for the rest of the world. We are persevering people, despite all the obstacles, we keep fighting for what we want to achieve. After years of difficulty, we are leading in several areas on the world stage. Vega won highest possible score of 9.9 in every presentation at the Miss Universe Colombia contest, according to the pageant's website. The five-foot-nine (180 centimeter) model from Barranquilla is the granddaughter of legendary tenor Gaston Vega and 1953 Miss Atlantico, Elvira Castillo. She beat out Ukraine's Diana Harkusha, Yasmin Verheijen from the Netherlands and Miss Jamaica Kaci Fennell, who were also top five finalists. The 63rd edition of the Miss Universe pageant, held at Florida International University, geared up with the traditional parade of eye-catching national costumes before a full house of enthusiastic fans. Ten judges were tasked to select this year's winner, including Cuban-American music mogul Emilio Estefan, Cuban soap opera star William Levy and Philippine boxing great Manny Pacquiao. The event is actually the 2014 Miss Universe pageant. The competition was pushed back until now to try to get a bigger television audience. The contest, owned by Donald Trump, is watched by about 600 million worldwide, pageant officials say. There was some criticism of the USD 2.5 million contribution that the city of Doral made to the pageant, as local politicians were divided over whether the promotion for the city near Miami is worth that money.

Tech Buzz: Beijing team proposes effortless phone charging with light beams

go by Nancy Owano
A prototype implementation of AuthoCharge. Top: the charger side components. Bottom: the smartphone side components. Credit: Yunxin Liu et al.

"Hurry up, my phone's dying." A familiar wail heard on the move. Cutting-edge smartphones pose charging headaches faster than the smartphone owner likes, with their powerful multicore CPU and GPU cores, screens, high-speed wireless network interfaces, energy-expensive apps and continuous sensing tasks. Can a light beam ease the charging exercises to effortlessly charge a smartphone? Three researchers think so.

Yunxin Liu, Zhen Qin and Chunshui Zhao of Microsoft Research, Beijing, have written a paper on their work, "AutoCharge: Automatically Charge Smartphones Using a Light Beam." They have named their approach AutoCharge and, like its title suggests, is designed to relieve the smartphone owner of the burden of any explicit effort to juice up the phone. Two steps are involved, detection and charging. Think of their approach as a "solar charging" technique but applied indoors with a wireless lightbeam. Think of it also as an image-processing technique designed to detect and track smartphones on a desk for automatic charging. Their paper reports the prototype that they designed and implemented, discussing the light charger and the smartphone detection and tracking system. The AutoCharge results: the prototype was able to detect the presence of a smartphone in seconds. Charging time was as fast as existing wired chargers.

perl tutor : How to modify your @INC include path - What to do when Perl modules aren't in their normal locations

The final thing to remember is that if this message comes back with an error, it doesn't exactly mean that this module isn't installed on the current system, it just means that the module isn't in your @INC include path.

perl tutor : How to modify your @INC include path - What to do when Perl modules aren't in their normal locations

When you have root access to a Unix server, it's pretty easy to install Perl modules in their proper locations, and forget about them. But if you don't have root access and you need to install your Perl modules in non-standard directories, how will you get your programs to find your modules?

In this article we'll demonstrate how to use the use lib statement in your Perl programs to include the non-standard location of your Perl modules into Perl's @INC search list.

Perl modules - use and require examples (with root access)

If you're lucky enough to have root access to your Unix server, it's easy to install Perl modules into their default locations. Once they're installed in their default locations, you just include the modules into your Perl/CGI programs with a "use" or "require" statement like this:

use "LWP.pm";

or this:

require "LWP.pm";

Include Perl modules when you don't have root access ...

If you don't have access to the root password on your Unix server, or you're not allowed to add Perl modules to the Perl installation directories, what can you do? (Note: This problem usually arises when you're renting web space on somebody else's web server, and they don't have the module installed that you need -- a fairly common occurrence.)

In cases like this, the thing to do is to install the Perl module yourself into a directory where you do have write permission. For instance, if my name is George, and my HOME directory is /home/george, I might install my Perl modules into a directory named /home/george/modules. If you follow the installation instructions for Perl modules, this is very easy to do.

Assuming that goes okay and you now have the module installed in /home/george/modules, how do you get your Perl/CGI programs to find the module? Fortunately, that too is easy. All you have to do is modify your Perl/CGI program slightly to tell the program where else it should look for modules.

For instance, if the people that host my web site didn't have the CGI.pm module available, I'd install it in /home/george/modules. Then I'd modify my Perl/CGI program to find the module by adding this line near the top of my Perl programs:

use lib '/home/george/modules';

This simple line of code tells your Perl program to add this directory to it's @INC search directory. @INC contains the list of directories Perl searches when looking for modules. The use lib command is the easiest way I know to modify @INC.

Tech Buzz: Intel to launch compute-on-a-stick device this year

Intel has come up with a compute-on-a-stick device which is pre-installed with Windows 8.1 or with Linux. The stick is four inches long and it carries a quad-core Intel Atom processor. Call it by its name, Compute Stick, or think of it as a neat way to do your work in a pocket-sized form factor. The stick has an HDMI output, a USB port and a microSD card slot.

Intel described the Compute Stick as having "built-in wireless connectivity, on-board storage, and a micro SD card slot for additional storage." The Intel Compute Stick launches later this year and the Intel Compute Stick site said to bookmark the page for details, product specs and availability information. What is already clear is that benefits include economy and convenience, as Intel said it offered "everything you love about your desktop computer in a device that fits in the palm of your hand." This is to be a low-cost plug-and-play transforming any large display into a functional computer. The mere fact that the stick has a Linux version for some is news in and of itself.

Lee Mathews in Geek.com ran through the differences between the stick's Windows 8.1 and Linux versions. With Ubuntu pre-installed, this Linux Compute Stick is to cost less. The stick will have just 1GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. Mathews said that was still plenty of power for basic computing tasks. The Windows with Bing version has 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage, and is priced at $149. Mathews said, "The Compute Stick could be a great way for schools, public libraries and other budget-constrained organizations to stretch their technology dollars." As for mobile workers, Nate Swanner in SlashGear noted that "If you were holed

Tech buzz: Windows 10 pre-consumer build leaked with new features: Cortana, Xbox and more

While Microsoft is yet to release the final version of Windows 10, a newly leaked build of the operating system gives a sneak peek into what is in store.

A video released by WinBeta showcases the 9901 build of Windows 10, which comes with a number of features that could make it to the final consumer version. As it's not the final version, many apps are currently broken, but a quick look at the interface shows that it's a lot cleaner and advanced compared with the earlier builds.

Cortana: The latest build of Windows 10 has a search feature built in, which lets you conduct voice searches using Cortana. While Cortana takes forever to load results in the current build, it is expected to function properly to give you web-based results when Windows 10 releases for consumers.

Movie Update 'Rudhramadevi': Anushka Shetty's New Look Released; Special Video to be out on 7 November

Anushka Shetty in Rudhramadevi Facebook/Rudhramadevi3D

The actress plays the role of Rudhramadevi, the princess of Kakatiya dynasty, in the film. "Rudhramadevi" team is planning to release "Making Video Journal on the special occasion of Anushka's birthday on 7 November. The actress will be turning 33.

Releasing first-look posters, teasers or making videos have become a trend of sorts in Telugu cinema industry. Last year, director Gunasekhar released the first-look poster of "Rudhramadevi" on Anushka's birthday and this year, he is planning to release a special video on her birthday occasion.

There are big expectations for "Rudhramadevi" as the film boasts of an ensemble cast including Anushka, Allu Arjun, Rana Daggubati, Krishnam Raju, Nithya Menen, Catherine Tresa, Aditi Chegappa and Prakash Raj among others.

Rana Daggubati plays the role of Chalukya Veerabadhra, while Allu Arjun will be appearing as Gona Ganna Reddy - a Robinhood kind of role.

"Allu Arjun's role will go down as one of the most memorable performances in the history of Telugu cinema. His role is similar to that of Robinhood and will appeal to both the masses and the classes," Gunasekhar told 123telugu.

The first-look poster of Anushka, Prakash Raj and the motion poster of Allu Arjun have generated huge buzz surrounding the project. It remains to be seen if the "Making Video Journal" manages to raise the hype.

The shooting of "Rudhramadevi" is completely wrapped up and the post production work is going on in full swing.

Produced by Gunasekhar, "Rudhramadevi" is touted to be the first women-oriented film to have been made with a big budget of around ₹50 crore. The film's music is composed by Ilayaraja, while cinematography is handled by Ajayanan Vincent and edited by Sreekar Prasad.

The historic drama is expected to hit the screens in January 2015.

The world’s 50 most innovative companies -2014

For nine years in a row, Apple has been the most innovative company on the planet.

That designation comes care of Boston Consulting Group, the elite consultancy.

Since last year's list, Google climbed over Samsung to take the second spot, sliding the South Korean manufacturer into third.

Three companies vaulted into the top 50: The Japanese conglomerate Hitachi landed at No. 37, Marc Benioff's SalesForce.com landed at No. 40, and the Chinese phone maker Xiaomi made it all the way to No. 35.

Automobiles saw the biggest drop-off of any industry. A full 14 made the 2013 list, and that number fell to just nine this year.

Every year since 2005, the firm has surveyed more than 1,500 senior global executives for a snapshot of the most innovative companies in the world.

Each executive is asked to rate the companies in their industry by how innovative they are, and those results are then weighted to reflect three-year shareholder growth, revenue growth, and margin growth.

Here are this year's 50 most innovative companies:

Current News: The Nobel Prize in Physics - 2014

The Nobel Prize in Physics 2014

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences has decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physics for 2014 to

Isamu Akasaki
Meijo University, Nagoya, Japan and Nagoya University, Japan

Hiroshi Amano
Nagoya University, Japan

and

Shuji Nakamura
University of California, Santa Barbara, CA, USA

"for the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources"

This year's Nobel Laureates are rewarded for having invented a new energy-efficient and environment-friendly light source – the blue light-emitting diode (LED). In the spirit of Alfred Nobel the Prize rewards an invention of greatest benefit to mankind; using blue LEDs, white light can be created in a new way. With the advent of LED lamps we now have more long-lasting and more efficient alternatives to older light sources.

When Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano and Shuji Nakamura produced bright blue light beams from their semi-conductors in the early 1990s, they triggered a funda-mental transformation of lighting technology. Red and green diodes had been around for a long time but without blue light, white lamps could not be created. Despite considerable efforts, both in the scientific community and in industry, the blue LED had remained a challenge for three decades.

Current News:Facebook Closes WhatsApp Acquisition, Jan Koum To Match Zuckerberg’s $1 Annual Salary

Facebook Closes WhatsApp Acquisition, Jan Koum To Match Zuckerberg's $1 Annual Salary

Facebook is now the legal owner of WhatsApp, following a filing made with the SEC today. This is the final step in a process begun when Facebook announced its intent to acquire the messaging company in February of this year. The Facebook deal passed its final regulatory hurdle when it received EU approval to go ahead with the acquisition of WhatsApp last week.

In the filing, the company details the awarding of 177,760,669 shares of Facebook's Class A common stock and $4.59 billion to WhatsApp stakeholders, plus 45,941,775 in restricted stock to WhatsApp employees to complete the deal. Koum will join Facebook's board, and will also match Zuckerberg's annual base salary of $1, without eligibility for the company's bonus plan, though he does get a signing bonus of 24,853,468 restricted stock units as incentive for joining.
