Sport News :Djokovic challenges Federer to ‘keep up'

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic threw down the gauntlet to a resurgent Roger Federer on Saturday by challenging him to "keep up" as the Serb bids to repeat his landmark 2011.

Djokovic, who named the London Olympics as a top priority for the year, shrugged off the all-time Grand Slam champion's strong finish to last season culminating in victory at the ATP World Tour Finals.

The 24-year-old Djokovic went 70-6 last year and won 10 of 11 finals including three Grand Slams, starting with his demolition of Andy Murray at the Australian Open in January.

And Djokovic, speaking before beginning his title defence in Melbourne, warned he was primed to repeat his golden season, despite Federer's late-year hot streak.

Failed Russia Mars probe set to crash today(15-01-2012)

Russia's space agency on Sunday called off all predictions of the likely crash site of its ill-fated Mars probe only hours before the 13.5-tonne spacecraft was due to begin its fatal descent.

Roscosmos said on its website that fragments of the stranded Phobos-Grunt voyager would probably fall to Earth on Sunday between 1436 GMT and 2224 GMT.

But it cancelled its Saturday forecast of the debris splashing down in the Pacific off the western coast of Chile. Two earlier updates had the fragments falling into the Indian and Atlantic Oceans.

"The operations support group is keeping continuous watch of the Phobos-Grunt spacecraft's descent from orbit," the brief Roscosmos statement said.

Rare portraits of Mahatma Gandhi to be auctioned in England on Jan 24

A set of three portraits drawn from the life of Mahatma Gandhi by artist Clare Winsten will be auctioned in England on Jan 24 at the Mullocks Auction House.

The portraits estimated at 800-1,000 pounds ($1,230 to 1,530) each were drawn during Gandhi's visit to England 1930-31 for the Round Table Conference. Winsten, who was actively involved in social humanitarian causes, was a great friend of Gandhi.

Mullocks specialist Richard Westwood Brookes said: "We are honoured to auction these highly significant portraits as they carry immense importance to the people of India." The sale will also include literature relating to Punjab and documents on the Indian Mutiny of 1857.

Clare Winsten (1894-1989), Anglo-Jewish artist illustrator portraitist and sculptor, came to the Slade as a student in 1910, the year when Roger Fry's "Manet and the Post-Impressionists" exhibition changed the views of many artists in London. She showed academic and artistic talent since her schooldays, and gained a scholarship to the Female School of Art.

Russia says about its spacecraft may crash into Atlantic..........!

Russia's space agency has adjusted its forecast for the crash of a failed spacecraft, saying it may shower its fragments into the south Atlantic.

Roscosmos said the unmanned Phobos-Ground probe could plummet to Earth Sunday or Monday anywhere along a broad swath between 51.4 degrees north and 51.4 degrees south.

It said Friday that the mid-point in the two-day window would have the craft crashing into the ocean about 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of the coast of Chubut province in southern Argentina. It said the precise time and place of the uncontrolled plunge can only be clarified later as the probe draws closer to Earth.

At 13.2 metric tons (14.6 tons), the Phobos-Ground is one of the heaviest pieces of space junk ever to plummet to Earth, with highly toxic fuel accounting for the bulk of its weight.

Nanban Review - A must watch and best in Vijay's career: Rating: 3.75/5

Nanban, the official remake of Bollywood All Time Blockbuster movie '3 Idiots' released in a grand way today. Here is the complete review of the movie.

Cast: Vijay, Jiiva, Srikanth, Ileana D'Cruz, Sathyaraj, S. J. Surya
Lyrics: Na Muthukumar
Cinematography: Paramahamsa
Art: Muthuraj
Story by: Abhijat Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani,
Dialogues: Shankar and Madan Kargy
Music: Harris Jayaraj
Editing: Anthony
Cinematography: Manoj Paramahamsa
Distributed: Gemini Film Circuit
Directed by: S. Shankar
Rating: 3.75/5

Story:

'Nanban' is a story of 3 Engineering students who comes from different backgrounds with different goal in their lives. Panchavan Parivendan (Vijay), Sevalkodi Senthil (Jiiva) and Venkatramakrishnan (Srikanth) are the three friends who shares the room in a hostel. Senthil studies to raise his family's fortunes and get them out of poverty. Venkatramakrishnan studies engineering to pursue his father's wishes. But Parivendan studies for his simple passion in machines and devices. He wants to see studies that should be useful to our lives and doesn't believe in memorizing subjects like what Srivatsan aka Silencer (Satyan), who is the darling of professor Santhanam (Sathyaraj). But Professor don't like Parivendan. Meanwhile Srivatsan makes a open challenge to 3 friends saying that he will be in top position after 10 years. Parivendan loves professor's daughter Riya (Ileana), a medical college student.

How Parivendan impresses professor. How he changes the attitude of his friends towards their passion and studies. Who is Parivendan where he goes after the course completion? Who will be in top position after 10 years? Will Srivatsan stands in first position? All the answers to these questions will be interesting if we watch them on big screens.

Performances:

Vijay is apt in the role. He looked young as a engineering student. The roles of Jiiva and Srikanth do have equal preference to Vijay's role. When compared with previous films Srikanth and Jiiva looked younger in this film.

One of the show stellar is Satyaraj who acted as Professor Virumandi Santhanam. The performance of Satyaraj is excellent. His body language and physical personalities best suits the role. Satyan as silencer did his career best. He is the main comedian in the movie.

Ileana is cute and attractive. She is ape at her role. She is good at acting and dance movements . S J Suryah played a guest role in the movie which will bring twist in the story.

Analysis:

Even though Nanban is official remake of 3 Idiots, Shankar made few changes to match Tamil audience taste. The characterisations of all major roles is almost similar to original version. It seems Shankar didn't want to spoil the characterisations of roles by adding flavours.

Manoj Paramahamsa's camera is excellent. Music and background scores are another highlights in the movie. Movie is made with rich technical values like Shankar's previous films.

The movie has all the commercial elements along with a beautiful message. The way the message was convinced is excellent. The comedy scenes between Silencer and Vijay is excellent. Especially, the comedy scene by Satyan on stage brings continuous laughs. The classroom scenes are another highlight in the movie. Each classroom scene is different from other and it brings laughs.

Finally:

Given messages is not new to Shankar, but for in terms of Vijay Nanban will be best comedy and message oriented film in Vijay's carrer. Finally, Nanban is must watch film for all types of audiences.

Kalam awards Infosys prizes to six noted scientist

Former president A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Monday awarded six distinguished scientists with the Infosys Prize 2011, instituted by the Infosys Science Foundation, a not-for-profit trust set up by India's IT bellwether.

The winners are Kanpur Genetic Algorithms Laboratory director Kalyanmoy Deb in engineering and computer science, Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology scientist Imran Siddiqi in life sciences, Stanford University professor Kannan Soundararajan in mathematical sciences and Indian Institute of Science (IISc) physics professor Sriram Ramaswamy in physical sciences.

University of Chicago professor Raghuram G. Rajan and Centre for Policy Research chief executive Pratap Bhanu Mehta were awarded in Social Sciences (Economics and Political Science and International Relations respectively).

In recognition of their outstanding achievements and contributions in scientific field and social arena, Kalam honoured each of the winners with a prize money of Rs.50 lakh ($100,000), a 22-karat gold medallion and a citation expounding the Infosys laureate's work.

The noted scientists were selected by the Foundation trustees and the eminent jury panels comprising Nobel laureate Amartya Sen for Social Sciences, Shrinivas Kulkarni (physical sciences), Pradeep K. Khosla (engineering and computer science), S.R. Varadhan (mathematical sciences) and Inder Verma (life sciences).

The Foundation is funded by a corpus of Rs.100 crore (Rs.10 billion), contributed by the trustees and an annual grant from the global software major.

The Infosys Prize is amongst the highest in terms of money given for any award in India.

Trust president and the company's former director T.V. Mohandas Pai also announced on the occasion that the Foundation would introduce a prize for Humanities from this year (2012) covering philosophy, history, archaeology, linguistics and literary studies.

Congratulating the winners, Kalam said the awards celebrate the success of researchers, their research work and their teachers from school to university.

"We live in a knowledge-based era and a nation's strength is truly judged by the quality of collective knowledge. It is important to recognise and encourage productive academic pursuits. Initiatives like Infosys Prize will boost the confidence of researchers in physical, biological and social sciences and related fields," he said after presenting the awards.

Lauding the winners for world-class contributions in their respective areas of specialisation, Infosys chairman emeritus N.R. Narayana Murthy said the prestigious prize for the third year was a commitment to encourage the distinguished scientists at a time when it could make a greater difference to their career and attract young minds to research.

"The winners' effort and dedication to science, discovery and development will inspire educationists and researchers in India and the world over to strive harder to excel in science and technology and attain global recognition," he said on the occasion.

In his address on the occasion, Pai said scientific research was the bedrock of social and technological progress of any economy and the awards were not only intended to recognise outstanding scientists, but also to motivate the research community and persuade bright young people to adopt careers in research.

"There is a significant depth of scientific talent in the country and the objective of the Infosys Prize is to identify and encourage such outstanding talent," Pai added.

Cricket News :Twitter ban on Team India after Kohli's online rant

After back-to-back defeats to Australia in the Sydney and Melbourne Test matches, the Indian team management Down Under has instructed players not to use social networking sites to voice their opinions. This comes in the wake of Virat Kohli justifying his middle finger gesture to the Sydney Cricket Ground fans, who reportedly heckled him on Day Two of the second Test last week. "I agree cricketers don't have to retaliate.

What when the crowd says the worst things about your mother and sister. The worst I've heard," Kohli said on his Twitter account after the incident. The young Delhi batsman was fined 50% of his match fee by International Cricket Council match referee Ranjan Madugalle for his finger gesture.

According to the ICC, Kohli was charged with a Level 2 offence under article 2.2.8 of the code which relates to "Using language or gesture(s) that is seriously obscene, seriously offensive or of a seriously insulting nature to another Player, Player Support Personnel, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person during an International Match".

However, Kohli's tweet attracted other comments including England batting star Kevin Pietersen, who tweeted: "Ha ha ha ha ha!!! Welcome to Australia buddy!!"  Kohli replied: "Never heard crap like that. EVER". It is learnt that the team management was wary that responses to tweets could cause a storm and hence instructed to stay away from their keypads.

A source said on Sunday that the team management don't want players to pay any attention to any comments. Virat's behaviour and reaction has not been well accepted within the team and the management is hell bent on avoiding any controversy whatsoever on this tour. It can be recalled that the 2007-08 tour of Australia was marred by controversy.

Wozniacki, Djokovic top Australian Open seedings.............!

Caroline Wozniacki and defending champion Novak Djokovic are the top-seeded players at the Australian Open.

Tournament organizers stuck to convention and based the seedings for the season's first major on the current WTA and ATP rankings.

Djokovic is followed in the men's draw by Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Of the top 32 men, only Robin Soderling and Marin Cilic are absent.

Petra Kvitova can move from No. 2 to No. 1 in the rankings by winning the Sydney International — where nine of the top 10 women are playing, including Wozniacki— but it wouldn't change the Australian Open seedings. All the top 32 women have entered the Melbourne draw.

Leopard kills man, scalps another in Guwahati..........!

A leopard that wandered into Guhawati went on a rampage, killing one man, swiping off part of another man's scalp and injuring three other people before authorities tranquilized the animal.

Neighbours in the area said the big cat attacked a 50-year-old lawyer as he talked on his cell phone on Sunday evening outside his house. He was rushed to hospital where he died.

Four other people were injured, including a man who had part of his scalp torn off by the animal in a dramatic episode captured by a local newspaper photographer.

Guwahati wildlife official Utpal Bora says authorities plan to release the animal at a wildlife park about 120 miles (200 kilometers) west of the city.

Conservationists say deforestation has increasingly pushed leopards into populated areas.

Sonu Sood might return to ‘Dabangg 2.!

Sonu Sood might return to 'Dabangg 2′. If sources are to be believed, the actor has been asked by Salman Khan to feature in the sequel of their 2010 blockbuster.

In October last year, producer Arbaaz Khan announced that the sequel's script didn't allow him to cast Sonu in the role of villain Chhedi Singh once again. However, latest developments indicate Sonu will feature in the sequel.

On an earlier suggestion made by Salman, Sonu was supposed to play his character Chhedi Singh's twin brother in 'Dabangg 2′. But then the 'Dabangg 2′ script brought in another arch-villain, to be played by southern star Prakash Raj.
That's when Sonu decided to gently get out of the way.
But now Salman wants him back. According to sources, Salman feels Sonu Sood is integral to the 'Dabangg' franchise. When Salman heard that Arbaaz had decided to write Sonu's role out of 'Dabangg 2′, he wasn't too pleased.
And as other components of 'Dabangg 2′ began to fall into place, Salman felt the need for Sonu's presence.
"Salman asked Sonu to return to 'Dabangg' at his birthday bash in Panvel last week. This happened in front of Arbaaz, Sohail and a whole lot of other people. Sonu was embarrased. He didn't know what to say because this was not the first time Salman had asked him," said one of Sonu's friend.
"Earlier in Hyderabad, Salman had broached the subject, saying 'Dabangg' wouldn't be the same if the two of them – Salman and Sonu – didn't share a climax fight. Sonu loves Salman to death. But at this juncture of his career, Sonu isn't sure when he has a solo-hero film 'Maximum' ready for release, he wants to do a marginal part. However, for Salman, Sonu would agree to return to 'Dabangg'," added the friend.
'Dabangg 2′ will release in December 2012.
