News About Universal: NASA releases stunning timelapse pictures of solar storm hitting earth

Spectacular new images of the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, have been released by the US space agency NASA after their capture by a new time-lapse photographic technique.

NASA has taken numerous images of the Aurora Borealis, or Northern Lights, over the years, but these are the first "moving" images combining hundreds of still images taken from the International Space Station.

Digital cameras are providing NASA scientists with some of the clearest, highest resolution images of space they have ever seen.

One NASA scientist has turned to time-lapsed photography, stringing together digital images rather than video for images of movement in the heavens.

Earth Scientist Melissa Dawson came up with the idea late last summer when she saw images from the International Space Station taken every three seconds as the station passed along the eastern coast of North and South America.

Each of the time lapse videos requires at least 500 images to produce the sense of movement as if in a video image.

Auroras form when a "solar wind" of charged electrical particles from the Sun enters Earth's magnetic field, accelerating electrically charged particles trapped within.

The high-speed particles then crash into Earth's upper atmosphere over the polar regions, causing the atmosphere to emit a ghostly, multicoloured glow.

Current News :10 facts about Apple's iPad battle in China

Apple has been caught in a series of suits and countersuits over who owns the 'iPad' trademark in China. We give you a rundown of all the essential developments in this story.

1. A Chinese court has rejected Apple's appeal in a case regarding who owns the 'iPad' trademark in China, paving the way for a 10 billion Yuan (USD 1.6 billion) suit against the technology giant.

2. The battle began in October 2011 when Proview, a monitor manufacturer based in Shenzhen, China, sued Apple over violation of the 'iPad' trademark.  Proview Shenzhen claims to own the 'iPad' trademark in China since 2001.

3. Apple responded with a suit of its own in December 2011 to assert its right of the 'iPad' trademark in the Higher People's Court of Guangdong Province. The suit was promptly rejected and Apple given 30 days to appeal against the verdict.

4. Apple filed the expected appeal last month.  The rejection of this appeal on 6th February, 2011 has paved the way for proceedings in Proview's original 10 billion Yuan case to resume.

5. Proview Taiwan had sold the 'iPad' trademark to UK-based IP Application Development in 2006 for USD 55,000.

6. In January 2010, just before the original iPad was officially announced, IP Application Development started filing for the 'iPad' trademark in US and other countries worldwide.

7. Later that year, IP Application Development transferred the worldwide rights to the 'iPad' trademark to Apple.

8. In their lawsuit, Proview Shenzhen insists its Taiwan affiliate was not authorized to perform the sale and, thus, it still retains ownership of the 'iPad' trademark in China.

9. The impact of the lawsuit beyond the damages isn't clear yet. Strictly speaking, Apple might be forced to sell its tablet under a name other than iPad. Whether Proview is looking to do that or just looking for a compensation from Apple as it says, isn't clear yet.

10. China has become a key market for Apple recently, with the iPhone 4S being a smash hit since it was launched on 13th January 2012. The demand was so overwhelming that Apple was forced to halt the in-store sale of the iPhone 4S in Beijing and Shanghai, citing safety concerns for its staff as well as customers, and switch to online sales only.

Current Crises: 10 Facts About the Situation in Maldives

The former president of the Maldives, Mohammed Nasheed, faces arrest  after being ousted from his post earlier in the week in what he says was "a coup at gunpoint". Here are the top ten developments in the recent crisis that has plagued the 1200-island archipelago:

  1. A criminal court, headed by Justice Abdullah Mohamed, in the Maldives issued arrest warrants for ousted president Mohamed Nasheed and his former defence minister.Mr Naheed's supporters have now surrounded ousted his house to prevent an arrest.

  2. Mr Nasheed's wife and children have flown to Colombo, Sri Lankan presidential spokesperson Bandula Jayasekara confirmed.

  3. The ousted president of the Maldives said yesterday he had been forced out of power at gunpoint. Mohamed Nasheed, who in 2008 became the first democratically elected president of the archipelago resigned on Tuesday after three weeks of protests that culminated in a police revolt.  The country's vice-president, Mohammed Waheed Hassan, took over.

  4. New President Mohammed Waheed Hassan has denied claims there was a coup or a plot to oust Nasheed. The former vice president, he said he had not prepared to take over the country and called for a unity coalition to be formed to help it recover. On Tuesday, he appeared to be consolidating his power by appointing a new military chief and police commissioner. He later swore in defence and home ministers, the first members of his new Cabinet.

  5. Pro-Nasheed protesters and the police clashed on the streets of Male, and elsewhere on the island chain. Speaking to about 2,000 wildly cheering members of his Maldivian Democratic Party in the capital, Male, Mr Naheed called for former vice president Hassan's immediate resignation and demanded the nation's top judge investigate those he said were responsible for his ouster.

  6. Mr Nasheed's supporters have taken control of some small police stations but larger ones stayed under official control, official spokesman Amhed Shyam said. Residents told local reporters that as many as 10 police stations on smaller islands may have been seized.

  7. The Maldives police, a key player in events that led to the resignation of president Mohamed Nasheed, accused his party of fomenting "terrorism" as violence spread across the holiday resort archipelago.

  8. Mr Nasheed had on January 16 ordered the military to arrest the criminal court Chief Justice Abdulla Mohamed, saying he was blocking corruption and human rights cases against Former President Gayoom and his allies. That set off the protests that led to what Mr Nasheed's supporters 'coup' against Mr Nasheed.

  9. Speaking to NDTV, Paul Roberts, the former advisor to Mr Nasheed, said, "India needs to get off the fence...India needs to decide who it supports." Indian troops were sent in to Male in 1988 when the then President Maumoom Abdul Gayoom faced a coup by mercenaries of the People's Liberation Organisation of Tamil Eelam.

  10. The Maldives, a country of 1,192 Indian Ocean islands scattered across the equator, is famous for its upmarket holiday resorts and hotels that cater for honeymooning couples and high-end travellers.

News :UIDAI refresh strategy to roll out in second phase from April

The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) will be
refreshing its data collection process by including the best finger
detection and multiple-try method in the second phase of enrolment in
April, the agency's chairman Nandan Nilekani said Tuesday.

"We have got the mandate to add another 400 million people. So we felt
it was a good opportunity for us to take stock of all our achievement,
examine all our process, technology, our audit etc. and see how we can
make any slight improvements or tweaks. And then we definitely intend
to roll it out by April," Nilekani told reporters here.

The UIDAI has collected data for 20 crore people in the first phase.

"We will be conducting multiple tries which means you try the finger
two three times and it will work better. Second thing is we are
conducting best finger detection. Out of your ten fingers which one
can give the best authentication so we have prepared a software for
that," he added.

Katrina Kaif To Work With Rajinikanth, Kamal Haasan

Katrina Kaif is on a roll in the South. She has been offered Rajnkanth's comeback film post his illness, Kochadaiyyan. All formalities including the money (reportedly a whopping Rs 5 crores) have been agreed on.

But just when she was to ink the deal comes Kamal Haasan with an offer to play the lead in his Hindi-Tamil-Telugu anti-corruption epic Amar Hai that goes on the floors by year-end.

Says a friend close to Katrina, "She's very eager to work with Rajnikant. It's like a wish come true for every Indian actress to do at least one film with him.

And Kamal Haasan is Kamal Haasan. And to be offered a film by him is a big honour. Between shooting for the two Yashraj films with Salman and Shah Rukh Khan, she has to find the time to squeeze in the Tamil icons."

According to the Kochadaiyyan producers Katrina's portions are all that remains to be shot. Kamal Haasan's film has some pronounced advantages for Katrina.

Says the source, "Firstly she's a big Kamal Haasan fan. Secondly though Kamaji plays the title role of Amar in the film, Kat has a dream role in Amar Hai, the kind that she has never played before."

Haasan confirmed Katrina's presence in the project. "She has been approached by the producer. It would be lovely to have her on board. The role suits her perfectly."

Yuvraj Singh To Be Fully Fit In 10 Weeks: Doctors

The team of doctors who treated Yuvraj Singh in India on Monday asserted that the cricketer would be fully fit within ten weeks and he indeed was undergoing treatment in the US.

Lauding Yuvraj for 'tremendous mental strength', the doctors said that he was fitter now than compared to the last few months simply for his dogged spirit. "He would be completely fit in ten weeks. We had detected Seminoma in the early stages and it is an extremely curable condition. He would have needed surgery if the Seminoma was in the testicles, which is not the case with Yuvraj," the doctors added.

"We would not be able to give you the details where he is being treated till he wants to tell it. He needs your support and we should respect his privacy," the panel of doctors said.

The doctors insisted that with the right amount of training and exercise the cricketer would emerge fitter than ever.
