Tech Buzz:Facebook launches mobile app which does not require Facebook account

Facebook Inc launched a smartphone app on Tuesday that will allow consumers to exchange disappearing photos and videos without requiring Facebook accounts, the Internet company's latest effort to develop mobile services beyond its core social network.

The new app, dubbed Slingshot, allows users to sign up for the service with their mobile phone number and connect with friends in their phone's contact list or, if they want, by finding their Facebook friends.

Photos on Slingshot disappear from users' phones shortly after they are viewed, reflecting a growing anxiety about privacy in the age of Internet social networking.

Facebook's release of Slingshot comes as a new crop of mobile messaging services gain popularity and threaten to draw younger users away from Facebook's 1.28 billion-user social network.

Tech Buzz: BlackBerry offering 240,000 Android apps through Amazon's app store

BlackBerry Ltd has agreed a licensing deal with Amazon.com Inc that will let the Canadian smartphone maker offer some 240,000 Android applications from Amazon's app store on its line-up of BlackBerry 10 devices this fall.

The move allows BlackBerry to add a vast array of consumer-focused apps to its devices, and to focus on developing enterprise and productivity applications, the Waterloo, Ont.-based company said in a statement on Wednesday.

BlackBerry customers using devices powered by its 10 operating system will be able to access popular Android apps such as Groupon, Netflix, Pinterest, Candy Crush Saga and Minecraft.

The apps will be available on BlackBerry 10 devices from this fall, when the company rolls out the BlackBerry 10.3 operating system, the statement said.

The move is the latest by the smartphone pioneer to streamline its focus as it attempts to reinvent itself under new chief executive John Chen as BlackBerry phones have lost ground to Apple Inc's iPhone and Samsung Electronics Co Ltd's Galaxy devices.

Chen wants to remain a competitor in the smartphone segment, but is focused on making BlackBerry a dominant force in machine-to-machine communications. The company's QNX software already is a mainstay in the automobile industry, powering electronic and other systems in a wide range of cars.

And Facebook will track your reading habits, even if you don't login via Facebook or click on 'like' button on the site.

Tech Buzz: Vertu Signature Touch- A $22,000 Android phone feels like

With Vertu finally offering an up-to-date luxury phone, we naturally had to check out the Signature Touch up close and personal. After all, it's not everyday that one gets to play with a $21,900 phone for free (though you can do so at any Vertu boutique, as long as you're nicely dressed). For those who haven't caught up with the announcement, we're looking at a 4.7-inch 1080p display, a 2.3GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 chip, 64GB of storage, 13MP/2.1MP cameras, a 2,275mAh battery, Qi wireless charging, NFC and a handful of LTE bands. With the exception of the battery (which, to be fair, is already much larger than those on previous models), these are all very decent for an Android 4.4 device.

As hinted by its name, the Signature Touch continues the legacy of the Signature series by carrying its iconic features. Under Vertu's new lead designer, Ignacio Germade, the masculine "V-spine" design and the D-ring latch (for popping open the Micro SIM tray cover) remain; though the ceramic ear pillow is now smaller and makes way for a titanium chin, instead of being surrounded by a metallic bezel. Another notable change is that the stereo speakers -- developed in partnership with Bang & Olufsen -- are now facing the front, which makes a lot more sense than the sideway speakers on the similar-looking Ti.

The ringtones produced by the London Symphony Orchestra sounded exceptional on those speakers, which isn't a surprise. According to Hutch Hutchison, Vertu's Head of Concept Creation and Design, each ringtone is tuned for optimal effect on each model, rather than just copying the same audio files to the whole range. A new addition on this end is the set of Dolby Digital Plus effects, which should come in handy for watching movies and playing games.

Another big collaboration on the Signature Touch lies within its 13-megapixel and 2.1-megapixel cameras. We're still surprised that Vertu managed to get renowned camera maker Hasselblad to help optimize the imaging performance; though sadly, we'll have to wait for the final camera software before we can judge the results.

Tech Buzz:Micromax Canvas Gold A300 now in India for Rs 23,999

Micromax has quietly started selling the new Canvas Gold smartphone in the Indian market. Now available at Infibeam.com for INR 23,999, it is the most expensive phone from the company till date.
Micromax Canvas Gold A300
  • 5.5-inch full HD display
  • 2GHz octa-core processor (most likely from MediaTek)
  • Android 4.4.2
  • 2300 mAh battery
  • front  camera
  • Micromax a 16MP auto-focus rear camera sensor from Sony with LED flash and a 5MP front shooter.
  •  dual-SIM support
  •  2GB of RAM
  •  32GB of internal storage
  • Wi-Fi
  • Bluetooth
  • GPS and 3G.

While the specifications (apart from the just 2300 mAh battery) are quite decent, we doubt if the consumers will be willing to spend 24K on a Micromax smartphone. Despite being the second biggest smartphone vendor in the country, the company is yet to shed the tag of being a non-premium smartphone maker.

Tech Buzz:BlackBerry Z3 Set to Launch in India

blackberry_z3.jpg

BlackBerry's recently launched low-cost touchscreen smartphone, the Z3, seems all set to be launch in India on June 25. The company has started sending invites for the event scheduled next week with a tagline that said, "Join us to witness the unveiling of the next generation BlackBerry 10 device."

The BlackBerry Z3 was initially announced in Indonesia and is one of the first devices being made with FIH Mobile Ltd, a unit of the Taiwanese Foxconn Technology Group best known for building devices such as the Apple iPad and iPhone.

The Z3 was made available for the Indonesian market starting mid-May and has been priced less than $200 (roughly Rs. 12,000). Considering the Indonesian market pricing of the BlackBerry Z3, we can expect the smartphone to be priced in the budget segment and will likely intensify competition in the smartphone space in India.

The Z3 runs BlackBerry 10 OS (version 10.2.1) and features a 5-inch qHD (540x960 pixels) display offering an aspect ratio of 16:9. It is powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 (MSM8230) processor with 1.5GB RAM.

BlackBerry's Z3 sports a 5-megapixel autofocus rear camera and also houses a 1.1-megapixel fixed-focus front-facing camera. The smartphone includes 8GB of inbuilt storage, which can be expanded up to 32GB via microSD card. It packs a 2500mAh battery, which is rated to deliver up to 15.5 hours talk time and up to 384 hours of standby time. Connectivity options include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G, GPS, NFC and Micro-USB.

The BlackBerry Z3 smartphone also comes preloaded with some BlackBerry services such as BlackBerry Hub, BBM, Time Shift, Story Maker camera features, and BB10 browser.

Tech Buzz:Speaker that can charge your smartphone

Speakers for listening some groovy music is fine but a speaker that can charge your gadgets like smartphone or iPad is something that would make your ears perk up.

Los Angeles-based Outdoor Tech has designed "smart" speakers named "Big Turtle Shell" that charge other devices' batteries while you listen to music.

When the speaker is laid flat, it can still push sound in directions other than straight up in the air.

Not only does the "Big Turtle Shell" offer impressive battery life — its powerful battery gives you up to 16 hours of playtime per charge, it also charges other devices for you.

There is a USB port built into the side of it. The speaker can charge smartphones as well as iPads and other devices that require 2.1-amp charging.

That makes it a useful multi-purpose tool for camping, beach trips, and other outdoor adventures. According to a wired.com report, the "Big Turtle Shell" is shock proof, sand- and dust-proof and water-resistant.

The speaker supports Bluetooth 4.0, NFC pairing, and line-in input through a 3.5mm port, the report added.

Tech Buzz: Blackphone hopes to satisfy privacy concerns In 3 weeks

After having been available for preorder since the beginning of the year, the privacy-centric Blackphone will be shipping in three weeks for $629. The device is pitched as an Android smartphone that's designed around security and privacy, both areas of growing concerns with the rise of malicious software, hacks, and government surveillance.

The phone's shipping announcement was made in San Francisco, California at the MIT Technology Review Digital Summit. Blackphone is designed from a partnership between Geeksphone and security firm Silent Circle.

The device will provide end-to-end encryption for Blackphone customers who interact with each other. For messaging from a Blackphone device to a non-Blackphone, there will be a one-way encryption that occurs from the Blackphone side to Silent Circle servers.

Additionally, Blackphone can mask what information and block apps from obtaining private information. In one example, if an app requires access to the phone's address book, Blackphone can intercept that request and tell the app that the address book is empty.
