This blog post tries to encapsulate the AIIMS exam notification touching upon the important points while a subsequent blog article would give you the AIIMS entrance study materials – sample papers & books for preparation of the exam.

At first, let me un-nerve you a little with AIIMS MBBS exam statistics. How tough do you think AIIMS entrance exam is? How many seats are there vis-à-vis how many people appears for the AIIMS entrance exam?

AIIMS acceptance rate:
Well let me tell you AIIMS MBBS entrance exam is very competitive – each year close to 50,000 students appears for this exam and for only 70 odd seats (in AIIMS entrance 2009 exam, 45000 students appeared for 72 seats – source: Indian Express) – the acceptance rate thus is about 0.15% - which means only 15 person in every 10 thousand who appeared could get a seat.
Compare this with the acceptance rate of Ivy League institutes like Harvard –7.1% (22,955 students applied, 2,058 accepted), Yale – 8.3%... source: NY Times.

So AIIMS entrance exam is indeed difficult, but that should not deter you from appearing in the exam. Why? Because, those of you who are brilliant would get that coveted seat in AIIMS. But even if you do not get an AIIMS seat, the preparation for it could very easily get you a good medical college through AIPMT (All India Pre Medical Test), which is held in April 1st week every year. Because the exam pattern of AIPMT & AIIMS is very similar as you can find from following table:
AIPMT Vs. AIIMS
